HP stuck on the logo screen? What a boot loop really means

An HP that freezes at the logo or restarts in a loop is usually a failing drive or corrupted Windows — not a dead laptop. What's actually happening, what not to do, and how we diagnose it in Perth.

You press the power button, the HP logo appears… and nothing else ever does. Or Windows starts loading, fails, restarts, and goes around again. A boot loop feels catastrophic — but on the bench, it’s one of the most recoverable faults we see, and your files are usually fine.

What’s actually happening

When an HP hangs at the logo, the firmware has done its job and handed over to the operating system — which then can’t finish starting. The usual suspects, in the order we find them:

  1. A failing storage drive. By far the most common. Ageing SSDs and hard drives develop slow or unreadable sectors; Windows stalls trying to read them. The logo screen is just where the stall becomes visible.
  2. Corrupted Windows system files. A bad update, a forced shutdown mid-write, or drive errors quietly corrupting things over time.
  3. A recent update or driver gone wrong. Especially after major Windows feature updates.
  4. Board-level faults. RAM or motherboard issues can mimic all of the above — rarer, but it’s why proper diagnosis beats guesswork.

What not to do

Don’t keep force-restarting it over and over. If the drive is failing, every boot attempt hammers the weak sectors and can turn recoverable data into unrecoverable data. Two or three tries is enough to know it isn’t a one-off. And skip the YouTube advice about factory resets — a reset onto a failing drive makes things worse, and it erases the files you probably want kept.

The drive comes out first and gets assessed on dedicated equipment — that tells us in minutes whether it’s healthy, degrading, or dying, and it protects your data before anything else is attempted. From there: a healthy drive means we repair Windows in place; a degrading drive means we clone your data across to a new SSD (which also makes an older HP dramatically faster); a board fault means we quote board-level repair honestly before you spend a cent more.

The upside nobody expects

A large share of boot-loop HPs leave our workshop faster than they’ve run in years — because the fix (a modern SSD with your data cloned onto it) is also the single best upgrade an older Pavilion or ProBook can get. The scary fault and the best-value upgrade are often the same job.
